Hi Mark
I am supporting an RTO implementing Moodle and Mahara, but this also puts me on a steep learning curve just ahead of my client. I have to confess up front that I am still not convinced of e-learning and get to witness more bad than good examples of e-learning in practice. I have also had to save quite a few students who have been the victims of poorly exicuted e-learning.

I thoroughly enjoyed your video tutorial and look forward to looking at more of your work. Please continue the excellent work.

Bugga,

There goes that one - so its still not really acting in the way I hoped it would.

This would be another good comment to make in the Tracker about the expected vs actual behaviour - if you're willing that is :)

Thanks for the post,

Mark.

Hi Mark,

Tried the workaround but (as I'm sure you know by now) this method copies the files from your original folder against each individual resource. Therefore, you can't simply go back into the original folder and update the file and have the update flow across to your subsequent resources.

It's a copy, not a link.

Still looking for a satisfactory work-around... :-(

Hi Mark,

Topic of Moodle/Mahara integration is very interesting for me as I'm using these systems in my PhD project. I was looking at your presentation today and would like to ask some questions. Do you have any other contacts except for your LinkedIn 'contact me' link?

Thank you!

Fantastic news Tim - I knew I'd heard Julian mention it but I didn't realise Petr was maintaining it. Also look forward to hearing more from OU about how the migration is progressing.

Book module is maintained by Petr Skoda, who is working on a Moodle 2.0 version between trying to get the main Moodle 2.0 release done.

The OU is looking to move to Moodle 2.0 in about a year's time, so our plugins will all up updated by then, but probably sooner than that.

Hi Miriam,

While I don't disagree with your feelings about the current clunkiness of the Files interface, I guess I'd encourage people such as yourself who are obviously very experienced and knowledgeable members of the Moodle community to follow the great examples of people like Mary Cooch and Davo Smith in suggesting ideas for how to improve the current interface rather than just panning it. The tracker item for discussing improvements is here, get in there and suggest a way to make it usable without returning to the 'bad old days' of information silos in 1.9.

Thanks for this post. I'm finding the files system (or lack of) rather frustrating myself. Yes, I understand the desire to move away from a files repository, but with how it is RIGHT NOW, teachers are not going to be able to FIND the files that they want to access from other courses, which defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

"I have that file on Moodle already, you can just link to that one..."
"Cool, where is it?"
"Wouldn't have a clue!"

Seriously.

Hi Ann,

In a word - no. The focus of Mahara is quite different from Moodle and is based around openness and social networking, so users are free to search for and find other users within Mahara, their membership to any groups is irrelevant.

There has been talk of setting up a 'walled garden' concept in Mahara, (search for that term in mahara.org if you want to find out from the source) which aims to segregate users belonging to different institutions in Mahara, which would be the case if you had people connecting from two different Moodle sites for example, but this is about as close as you'll get as far as I know.

Hope this helps,

Mark.
