Amidst much geeky fanfare Google recently unveiled its latest, greatest innovation – Google Wave. Without going into gory detail, and admitting freely that I’ve only gotten about two thirds of the way through the one-hour-twenty presentation video (but being otherwise filled in over dinner last night about the whole thing thanks to uber-geek Spud), Google Wave morphs instant messaging, email, document collaboration and a bunch of other tools into one more or less seamless platform, that just happens to be open source as well and lend itself brilliantly to integration with other applications thanks to a rich API. Just recently I’ve been asked to put together a couple of Community Hubs using Moodle, and its made me think about what works (and what doesn’t) in setting up such an environment.
Firstly, what do we mean when we talk about a Community Hub? To be honest I’m not sure if anyone has used that term much before, so if it turns out that it becomes a common term then remember – you heard it here somewhere early on in the piece.

Yes, I know what some of you are thinking – not another Drex blog, and I’m afraid the answer is yes. Unfortunately for some of you, this one will be free of the normal banter that has comprised previous blogs, but instead will follow my thoughts about working in the online education environment, for what its worth.
There will also be some discussion about me finally getting my hands dirty again for the first time in many years. For those of you who don’t know, I was a software developer for about three months, until everyone (well primarily me) realised that my VB6 coding was so bad that there was only one thing for me to do – become a software QA guy. To wind the clock back even further, I last used Unix commands in 1996, and even then I was rubbish.
