Moodle 2.0 First Impressions

Thanks to all those who came to my Moving to Moodle 2.0 presentation at the Australian Moodlemoot 2010 today, hopefully I kept to my word and just focused on a few specific elements rather than being a scattergun ;)

The presentation is shown below, and remember to also:

  • get on to Moodle.org and share your thoughts on how the file manager should work here
  • test out the latest version of Moodle 2.0 at the QA site
  • log any bugs you find in the Tracker
  • bid farewell to the Navigation Tool
  • Share/Bookmark

Making a splash – the five big differences that stand out in 2.0 (wave)

    File storage

    * Moving from file silos to a new file repository
    * Can link to repository – using the file picker
    * No longer a course files area – files are now uploaded and connected to an individual resource and activity
    * Files folder is no longer in the course settings block (for the moment!)

    Completion settings

    * Concept of course and activity completion comes into Moodle 2.0
    * Course completion status block – gets close to the progress bar block that many use. It allows students to see the set course requirements as set by the teacher
    * Teachers can also now look at a course report on the components that students in a course have completed.
    * Completion tracking link in settings allows teachers to define the settings for activity and course completion. Allows self completion or manual completion by the teacher or have it based on any number of activity completions within the course. Plus option of setting a passing grade!

    Conditional activities

    * E.g. in a quiz – scroll down to restrict availability
    * e.g. hide a review quiz unless a student has achieved a sufficiently low score in a quiz
    * You can also have conditional settings in the discussion forum (as part of the broader move towards conditional activities

    Navigation

    * The jump to drop down button has gone!
    * Wider linking in the bread crumb trail
    * E.g. home-courses-topic-activity

    Workshop

    1/ Assessment of work submitted
2/ Assessment of peer review by students
Rubric marking comes into the workshop module
